Because I Could Not Stop for Time
Because I Could Not Stop for Time
I could not stop for Time,
Though it had always been my friend.
It whispered soft and slow,
As seasons turned, it did not end.
I thought it would wait for me,
But like a river, it did not stay.
It passed by with gentle hands,
Carrying moments far away.
The clock would tick and softly say,
"Come, walk with me, this winding way."
It beckoned with a steady stride,
While I, in haste, wished to hide.
Time, with eyes so kind and old,
Told me stories, soft and bold.
The moments scattered like the leaves,
Each one a memory the mind believes.
I journeyed with it, unaware,
Of where it led, or what was there.
It showed me fields of golden hue,
Where flowers bloomed in morning dew.
We passed through gardens lush and bright,
Where colors shone in quiet light.
But Time, it seemed, did not stay still,
It moved on with quiet will.
The sun would rise and set again,
The moon would wax and then wane.
And yet, Time, with steady pace,
Led me through an endless race.
We passed the house where once I’d lived,
The rooms where love and laughter thrived.
But now they seemed so far away,
As Time had stolen them away.
We crossed the bridges, old and worn,
That once had seemed so full of form.
Now, with each passing year they bent,
A reminder of what Time had spent.
A river flowed beside the path,
Its current swift, its ripples fast.
It took the past and carried it,
While Time moved on without a fit.
The sky above, so vast and wide,
Held tales of stars that could not hide.
But Time, it seemed, cared not for them,
Its eyes were fixed on where we’d been.
Through forests dark and valleys deep,
We walked, though no promises to keep.
For Time, it whispered secrets low,
Of things we’d lost and things we’d know.
The days grew short, the nights so long,
And yet we traveled, all along.
I wondered where this journey led,
But Time, it spoke no words of dread.
It simply moved, both fast and slow,
And with it, I was meant to go.
Through moments bright and endless hours,
Through rain and sun and blooming flowers.
We passed the places I once knew,
The faces old, the skies once blue.
But Time, it moved beyond them all,
And left behind the past to fall.
I wondered if I’d have a place,
To rest my soul, to feel its grace.
But Time, it said, “There’s no retreat,
For all you love, for all you meet.”
At last, we came to where the road,
Began to curve, began to fold.
And Time, so steady, did not cease,
It led me to the place of peace.
There stood a door, both calm and wide,
It opened slow, there was no guide.
But Time, it said, "This is your end,
Where all things stop and start again."
The door was bright, yet dark within,
A place where time could never spin.
I stepped inside, and Time stood still,
Its ticking ceased, its voice was still.
I knew then, though Time had been my friend,
It would not wait, it would not bend.
And in its quiet, steady flight,
I saw the truth, the end of night.
Time, so kind and ever true,
Had led me here, to start anew.
In quiet stillness, I did find,
The peace beyond the hands of Time.
This poem, like Dickinson's, reflects on time as an unstoppable force, but it explores the passage of time through a more personal lens, capturing both the beauty and inevitability of life's journey.
Time, journey, life, memories, passage, change, reflection, peace, inevitability, timeless, moments, tranquility.
